Questions & Answers
What is the battery life?
The ProDSS uses a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery pack that lasts 48 hours with the instrument alone and about 20 hours with the instrument and fully loaded cable assembly.
How does the ProDSS compare to the Pro Plus in terms of parameters?
The ProDSS, like the Pro Plus, is a multi-parameter meter. The advantage of the ProDSS is that it can measure turbidity and optical dissolved oxygen, whereas the Pro Plus does not support turbidity and uses electrochemical dissolved oxygen. The ProDSS also has optional depth and GPS.
What is a “Smart” Sensor?
The “Smart” Sensor holds the calibration in the sensor, so it can be moved from meter to meter without needing to recalibrate.
Does the water quality meter come calibrated?
When ordered from Fondriest Environmental, all YSI sampling equipment is assembled and calibrated prior to shipment at no cost and includes a calibration report.
What software is available for the YSI ProDSS?
The ProDSS includes a USB memory stick containing Kor Software and PDF manual. Kor Software is an easy-to-use platform full of features for managing YSI instrumentation and water quality data. View live or recorded data, calibrate sensors, setup long-term deployments, and ensure equipment is operating at peak performance.
Do probes come with the handheld meter?
No, cable assemblies and sensors are sold separately.
Can the ProDSS meter accommodate the ProSwap 1-port cable assemblies?
Yes. Connect the ProSwap cable to a ProSwap or ProDSS handheld meter via the twist-lock MS connector.

Coastal Restoration in Rhode Island

Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in nature can likely relate to feeling connected and defensive toward protecting the environment. Heather Kinney, a coastal restoration scientist with The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island, knows this feeling well, having felt a deep connection to nature her entire life. “I have always had a deep love for nature and the environment, particularly being out on the water and being drawn to the ocean, as cliché as that sounds,” says Kinney. Being so close to nature her entire life led Kinney to pursue a career in conservation and restoration. “You want to protect what you love, and I think that once I fell in love with it- it was something that I wanted to be able to pursue professionally,” she explains.

Everglades Restoration: A Story of Wetlands and Water

The Everglades are famous as a popular tourist destination. In 2019, over one million people visited the famous national park that makes up their southern portion. They are also famous, though probably less so, for ongoing, large-scale restoration efforts aiming to restore some of the hydrology that earned the system the nickname the River of Grass. "Restoring the River of Grass to something closer to its former state will provide timely relief for vital wetlands that support wildlife, industry and the 8 million people that utilize the Everglades for the fresh water they provide.

A Floating Environmental Stewardship Classroom Visits Ohio

This summer a new way to learn about water recreation—and environmental stewardship—paddled into Ohio. With the help of the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments (TMACOG) , the US Environmental Protection Agency's (US EPA's) Urban Waters Program brought the Wilderness Inquiry Canoemobile “floating classroom” to Toledo for a few days. TMACOG Water Quality Planner Sara Guiher spoke to EM about the programming and the experience. “In August of 2018 we spoke with a representative from US EPA Urban Waters,” explains Guiher. “We received funding through them to bring programming to the area focused on urban water resources. The person that we talked to from US EPA suggested Canoemobile, which we had never heard of.
