Questions & Answers
What is the battery life of the ProDSS?
The ProDSS uses a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery pack that lasts 48 hours with the instrument alone and about 20 hours with the instrument and fully loaded cable assembly.
How does the ProDSS compare to the ProQuatro in terms of parameters?
The ProDSS, like the ProQuatro, is a multi-parameter meter. The advantage of the ProDSS is that it can measure turbidity and optical dissolved oxygen, whereas the ProQuatro does not support turbidity and uses electrochemical dissolved oxygen. The ProDSS also has optional depth and GPS.
What is a “Smart” Sensor?
The “Smart” Sensor holds the calibration in the sensor, so it can be moved from meter to meter without needing to recalibrate.
Does the YSI ProDSS arrive calibrated?
When ordered from Fondriest Environmental, all YSI sampling equipment is assembled and calibrated prior to shipment at no cost and includes a calibration report.
What software is available for the YSI ProDSS?
The ProDSS includes a USB memory stick containing Kor Software and PDF manual. Kor Software is an easy-to-use platform full of features for managing YSI instrumentation and water quality data. View live or recorded data, calibrate sensors, setup long-term deployments, and ensure equipment is operating at peak performance.
Do probes come with the ProDSS handheld meter?
No, cable assemblies and sensors are sold separately. See the Accessories drop-down for a full list of available ProDSS cable assemblies, sensors, and accessories.
Can the ProDSS meter accommodate the ProSwap 1-port cable assemblies?
Yes. Connect the ProSwap cable to a ProSwap or ProDSS handheld meter via the twist-lock MS connector.
Can multiple cable lengths be used with the ProDSS?
While multiple cable lengths can be used on the ProDSS, the user must keep in mind that the sensor bulkhead is not removable from the cable; therefore, the sensors will also need to be moved over to the new cable assembly when making this change. A re-calibration is not needed since the calibrations are stored in each individual sensor.
What is the purpose of the optional GPS on the ProDSS meter?
The integrated GPS allows the latitude and longitude to be displayed and logged with the water quality readings for geo-referenced data. The GPS can also be turned off when not in use to save on battery life.
What is the warranty on the ProDSS and what is the process to obtain warranty service?
The warranty period varies - 3-year instrument; 2-year bulkhead, cable assembly, and sensors; 1-year pH and pH/ORP sensor modules, ODO (optical DO) sensor caps, and Li-Ion battery pack; 6-months ammonium, nitrate, and chloride sensor modules. If warranty or non-warranty repairs are needed, customers can fill out our Service Request Form and ship it in for a no-cost evaluation.

From Assessment to Angler: Continual Research Ensures Lake Erie Remains a Beacon of Freshwater Fishing

Lake Erie is well known for its abundant recreational fishing. Anglers come from across the country to try their luck at the “walleye capital of the world” and search for other freshwater species, such as bass, perch, and steelhead trout.  As one of the world’s largest freshwater fisheries, much effort is made behind the scenes to maintain fishing opportunities for visitors to enjoy year after year, efforts that often go unnoticed by the public. One of the lake's most important economic and tourism centers is the city of Sandusky, home to the Sandusky Fisheries Research Station . As part of the Ohio Division of Wildlife, the unit serves as a base for assessing fish populations and managing harvest with partner agencies from around Lake Erie.

Combining Academia and Lake Associations: Monitoring Lake Lillinonah

Lake Lillinonah may be Connecticut's second-largest lake, but it holds a great deal of meaning for locals and researchers in the surrounding towns. The lake is so significant to the surrounding community that it is one of many lakes in the United States with a dedicated lake association advocating for the resource. Jen Klug, Professor of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Fairfield University , started her career at Fairfield as a natural progression in her background as a classical aquatic ecologist and found herself working closely with Lake Lillinonah's Friends of the Lake (FOTL) when they reached out to collaborate on an algae presentation for a public forum back in 2006.
