Colorado Water Watch delivers real-time water quality data from oil and gas drilling sites

A new water quality monitoring network and data distribution platform designed for oil and gas wells around Colorado just might ease some of the tensions that have built up around hydraulic fracturing in the state. Researchers from Colorado State University recently launched the Colorado Water Watch program with three groundwater sensor stations near active oil and gas wells in the Denver-Julesburg Basin. Data from the sensors are available for each parameter on the project's website, which also processes the readings into a simple green-to-red spectrum that can let laypeople see if something is wrong. Much of the controversy over fracking has been driven by a lack of independent, transparent data at drilling sites.

In Sierra Nevada streams, researchers on the lookout for drought-threatened fish

In the parched hills of the Sierra Nevada, researchers are surveying drought-weakened streams to see what effects long-term dryness is having on fish populations in the region. Their findings so far have been less than stellar, with sparse numbers of fish being counted. Still, as data collection is progressing, the researchers, who work out of the University of California, Davis’ Center for Watershed Sciences, are gathering insights that could aid in conservation efforts that are expected to grapple with coming climate changes. The purposes of the investigation are two-fold. “If we ever get rain again, we want to see how well these areas are recovering from drought,” said Rebecca Quinones, a postdoctoral researcher at the center and leader of the project.

Gallatin River watershed council monitors water quality in the nation's headwaters

Some portion of the water emptying into the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi River first passes through the Missouri River, which takes some of its flow from the Gallatin River near Three Forks, Montana. The Gallatin watershed is part of a region sometimes called the headwaters of the nation for its place far upstream of the country's major waterways. Though a healthy watershed is already vital to the rural agricultural lifestyle so prominent there, the people there have the added responsibility of being the first to see the water off on its journey to the Atlantic. "It seems like people here realize that water quality is really important," said Katherine Boyk, Big Sky Watershed Corps Member at the Greater Gallatin Watershed Council.
